DC Up Close: Celebrating 100 Years of Cherry Blossoms

DC’s National Cherry Blossom Festival is beloved by both locals and tourists alike, and each year, I look forward to braving the crowds to take in the beauty of these gorgeous tress. Given to the United States by Japan back in 1912, the cherry blossoms are celebrating their centennial this year, and Stephen and I had a fun time heading into town earlier this week to capture a few late-afternoon shots.

While down at the Tidal Basin, we also enjoyed visiting the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and catching a glimpse of colorful tulips blooming just about everywhere.

Have you ever been to DC during the National Cherry Blossom Festival? What signs of spring are popping up in your area right now?

  2. Great photos! I love photographing flowers - it really brightens my mood. I've only been to DC once, and it was in the middle of February (thank goodness it was a mild winter that year). The cherry blossoms in Japantown in SF have been blooming since February, but our cherry blossom festival isn't until April 22. Have a great weekend!

  3. They're gorgeous! I would love to visit DC during the spring sometime so I can see them. In the meantime, I'm planning to visit the Brooklyn Botanical Garden in NYC, which has a nice collection of cherry blossom trees.

I thought this was pretty neat that they are 100 years old this year. I would love to see them in person, too!

  13. Beautiful pictures! I had planned to go to DC for the Cherry Blossom festival - the only time I could go was leaving tomorrow and I have been informed that all the blossoms are on the ground so I am definitely very bummed out. xo

  14. What lovely photos, the photo of you and Stephen is so sweet. Did you see the postage stamps with the Cherry Blossoms on them? I would love to see them in person. Dogwoods are blooming every where and our tulips are ready to bloom, but now this cold front is making me worry! We put a box over them last night and probably will tonight again. Hopefully it helps!
