A celebratory fall trip to Hawaii? Yes, please! While Stephen
and I had originally talked about vacationing at Disney World or in Puerto Rico
this year, his parents recently surprised us by announcing their decision to
host a family trip to the Big Island in honor of their 40th wedding
anniversary.
Not only am I incredibly excited to spend a full week
exploring areas we only got to visit briefly during our honeymoon cruise a
couple years ago, but I also love the fact that we’ll be traveling out during
November – usually right around the time that colder weather starts to set in here
in DC, leaving me itching for a little extra sunshine and warmth.
Visiting Kauai during our honeymoon in June 2010. |
We haven’t officially lined up any activities as of yet, but
a few things topping my wish list are to try my hand at stand-up paddle
boarding, go hiking at Volcanoes National Park, and maybe even sneak in a bit of whale
watching on the side, if it’s not too early in the season. Either way, I know we'll have no shortage of fun ways to pass the time!
Have you ever been to Hawaii? If so, what’s your favorite island/activity?
i did the old luau thing, which i'm sure you did last time. and visiting the memorial, the usual tourist stuff. can't wait to see what you do this time.
ReplyDeleteI've been to Oahu, Maui and the Big Island, and I think the Big Island is my favorite. Be prepared for lots of lava rock and black sand - the bigger resorts bring in white sand for the tourists, but most of the island is wild, black volcanic ash, which is beautiful. Volcanoes Park is a "must," and if you are staying in Kona, try to make it to the farmers' market in Hilo. November will be a great time to travel - have an amazing time planning :)
ReplyDeleteI've been to Maui and Honolulu...both great. Def. do a luau, and relax by the ocean :)
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Hawaii but always wanted to go...enjoy all the big islands if you can!!
ReplyDeleteNever been to Hawaii but my husband lived there while stationed in Pearl Harbor during part of his service on the Navy.

SUch fun!! We honeymooned on the Big Island. Kona is fabulous. Hilo was not (but the falls out there are great). Bring a sweatshirt when you go to Volcanoes Park, because when we were there it was cold and windy (and I was in shorts and a tank). If you rent a car, it should be a jeep or something the goes off-road so you can see more stuff. We used our jeep a lot.
ReplyDeleteThere is a book called Big Island Revealed that is kind of a bible of stuff to see and do there. I recommend buying it.
