DC Up Close: Space Shuttle Discovery

Although I may have left my heart in California, I'm also the first to admit that there are definitely a lot of cool perks that come with being in the DC area. Perks like catching a once-in-a-lifetime glimpse of Space Shuttle Discovery en route to the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum this past Tuesday morning.

While it of course looks rather small in the picture, the 747 carrying the shuttle was absolutely gigantic in person, and I was thrilled to very clearly make out Discovery itself as the duo traveled right past our building and up the Potomac River. My sister-in-law also captured this awesome shot as Discovery flew above her office complex in Northern Virginia. All in all, the flyby was a truly incredible sight and such a fun "I was there" moment!

What fun perks do you love to take advantage of in your own neck of the woods?

  1. My parents live on the top floor of a condo building on the North Side of OT and got a perfect shot of this. However, we live in such a bubble here, when she sent me the pic I had no idea what I was looking at. haha So cool though!

  3. That is awesome!!! I can imagine how big it is because when I try to take a pic of the planes from the air base near us, they shrink! I love watching the fighter jets maneuver; they're so agressive!

  4. My office building is right across the street from Dulles Airport, we all went on the roof and got some great pictures of the flyby and the landing. It was really cool.

  6. Awesome photos! My favorite time of year is Fleet Week when the Blue Angels come and do their air show over the Bay. The week before is the best, since I can see them practicing for their show from my office window!

  12. that's so cool you got to see it!!! I had many friends down in DC who also saw it. I get to take advantage of Broadway shows and lots of things in NY..though sadly, I have to say I've become a little jaded to taking advantage of all the city has to offer.
