Aside from getting the flu or being forced to eat raw
onions, there are few things I hate more than moving. From the
boxes and pack-it-up chaos to the actual, you know, moving part, it’s an
organizational nut’s worst nightmare, especially when you skip the professionals
and decide to do it yourself. Which, by the way, I swore we wouldn’t be doing
this time.
Well, guess what? After getting moving company estimates we
thought were much too high based on the distance, our furniture and more, my
husband and I decided to bite the bullet and go the DIY route once again, transporting
smaller items in our SUV ahead of time and, yes, renting a Penske truck for the bigger pieces.
A sneak peek inside our new home! |
As we pulled into the lot two Saturdays ago, I tried to keep
my spirits up and the impending dread in check. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad
after all, right? RIGHT! One of Steve’s coworkers very graciously helped him
with the heavy pieces, while I held doors, carried smaller items and cheered the guys on. A couple short hours later, we were done, making it our smoothest,
fastest and easiest move ever.
Since then, we’ve made
great progress setting up and arranging things inside the new house, thankful that nothing was damaged, lost or broken. Best of
all, we can put the money we saved toward other new-home necessities and can also rest
easy knowing that we won’t be moving again for a very long time!
What are some of your tips for ensuring a smooth move?
We've always moved ourselves, too! So much cheaper especially considering how many cross-country moves we've done in the past 10 years. I don't have any tips except to just suck it up and get it done, haha.
ReplyDeleteHa ha! Being done is the only good part!
DeleteMoving is the worst!
ReplyDeleteYup, it sure is! I'm so thankful to be done with it for hopefully a long time.
Deletei would rather get a root canal than move. i despise the packing and the moving part, so kudos for y'all!! i am good at making sure things stay put. ;)
ReplyDeleteLOL. I told my husband I would rather go to the dentist every day for a year than go through the moving part, so you and I are totally on the same page. It's such a relief to finally be done with it!
DeleteYaahh...glad your move was successful! Moving companies are so darn expensive...we've moved several times too and i can't wait to move for the final time for a long time to come!!
ReplyDeleteI hope your move goes well, too, Mrs. Pancakes!
DeleteIt's great that you have someone willing to help you!
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a great weekend!
Jessica @ Sunny Days and Starry Nights
Yeah, it was so nice of him to offer his help. I hope you had a great weekend, too!
DeleteMoving really is the worst. I'm glad that things went smoothly for you! I can't wait to see what you get with the savings in moving costs then!

Thanks! I'll be sharing some pictures soon. :)
DeleteWe usually choose professional movers. Saves so much time and energy. I usually slot things room wise, so the packing becomes easier for them. Plus, we keep a floor plan of the new house handy, so we know what we can take, and what has to be left or sold.
ReplyDeleteBut yes. Moving sucks.
Sounds like you've found a great system that works for you!
DeleteSo smart to move yourself when it is a short distance! Glad you will be able use the extra money for fun!
ReplyDeleteYeah, it was definitely well worth doing it that way! It's great focusing on the fun stuff now.
DeleteWhen we moved to PA, Sean's company hired movers for us and it was amazing but boy is it expensive! We'll be doing the move by ourselves this time and I'm kinda dreading it. But it has to be done so ... hmm, how to guarantee a smooth move? I guess packing a head of time rather than a few days before, haha.
ReplyDeleteLove the sneak peak, excited for more! :)
Paid relocation is the best! Good luck doing it yourself this time around. Your new home looks gorgeous!
