So What! Wednesday: January 16, 2013

It’s been quite a while since I last linked up with So What! Wednesday, but because I’ve had a lot on my mind lately, including some big “life questions,” I figured this would be as good a time as any to jump back on board. Today, I’m saying “so what” if:

#1  I’m back on track with my workouts, but am still not down to my goal weight. I know that if I keep up the hard work, though, I will definitely get there this year!

#2  Now that Stephen has officially turned 30, I’m especially dreading my own birthday in September. Even though I’m proud of many things I’ve accomplished during my 20s, and everyone keeps telling me that 30 is “just a number,” there’s something inside of me that’s not yet ready to leave this “younger” phase of my life behind.

#3  My several recent attempts at becoming a vegetarian have failed. While I now rarely meat at home, and usually only have it for special occasions that include some of my favorite dishes, cutting it out completely just left me feeling too deprived. I also surprisingly gained weight during my meatless stints, since I ended up replacing lean meats with more cheese and dairy!

This spicy bean and veggie stir fry is one of my favorite meatless meals!
#4  I’m still not ready to have a kid, even though it sometimes seems as if everyone around me either already has a baby or is expecting one this year. I have nothing but congratulations for those who are ready to start their families, but I have too many other things I want to do before babies come along and take over my life.

#5  Since leaving my congressional job following the 2010 election, I haven’t been following a “traditional” career path like many of my peers. This is in part because Stephen and I had initially considered moving back to California – a plan we then rethought due to several can’t-pass-it-up career opportunities that came his way. But even though I may not have gone back to working a 9-to-5 job as of yet, I've still earned my master’s degree, worked on various writing and wedding coordination projects I loved, traveled, and spent lots of time with family. Figuring things out career-wise is definitely at the top of my goal list for 2013.

What are you saying “so what” to this Wednesday?

  1. Hang in there with everything! I love being in my 30s, but it was definitely a bittersweet feeling at first. I'm sorry to hear that vegetarianism didn't work out - I think the key to not feeling deprived is eating a lot of whole grains and beans. And limiting cheese will definitely help cut back the calories. Good luck getting to your goal weight and figuring out your path career-wise in 2013!

  2. You'll get there, Heather. And really, 30 is a "so-what?"

But beware: just because I'm having a baby at 25 doesn't mean it's taking over my life; it's changing my life in every way possible. I still have a say in what I do when baby is sleeping--that time is mine. I have heard of many women artists who flourish after having a child and I plan to be one as well.

  3. Personally I've enjoyed my 30's way more than my 20's. And I could never be a vegetarian, I love meat way too much!

  6. I know what you mean about not being ready to have kids when everyone else seems determined to pop them out at regular intervals. I'm looking forward to at least another 5 years of being without-child. Too much stuff to do!

  8. I think your 30s are the decade to figure out what you want in life. It's what I am trying to decide as well because I think 40s is to execute your plan. Don't worry too much about the kid situation, you still have plenty of time and good luck with the career plan.

  9. You have a lot going on lady! I'm with you re: family planning. We are a bit older and are finally thinking about it, but i'm one of the last holdouts among my friends. So many things happened when I turned 30. It will be a cool time for you!

  10. Good luck with all you've got going on! And you've still got some time before your birthday--enjoy it as much as possible, but really, 30 is just a number.

  11. I agree with Shannon above. My 30's have been way more fun than my 20's. For some reason 25 was hard for me but 30 didn't phase me one bit. :-)

  13. I remember before i turned 30 think about everything, but I must say it does get better and now I really wouldn't' trade my twenties for the thirties, I love my 30s. You will be fine and have plenty of time to figure things out. I love children as well, but do not want them at the moment. :)

I'm still sorting out the whole career thing...and while there is a million things I want to be, I think I may have finally decided!! However, first priority is to hurry up and finally finish my bachelors haha.
You have accomplished HEAPS! And I'm sure your thirties will only be more exciting and fabulous than your twenties!!
